U.S. to Clamp Down on ‘Forever Chemicals’ Used in Food Packaging

The Biden administration recently outlined plans to outlaw certain PFAS, or "forever chemicals," some of which are used in food packaging. The clampdown on perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) is primarily due to new research linking the substances to cancer, liver disease, and other serious ailments. PFAS are indeed found in grease-resistant paper used in some fast-food containers/wrappers, microwave popcorn bags, and pizza boxes. They are used in these and other consumer products because of their ability to provide increased resistance to heat, grease, stains, and water. The government's three-year initiative to regulate and restrict the use of PFAS will require publicly-reported tests from manufacturers. The White House is also concerned about the impact "forever chemicals" are having on the environment.
