Reimagining Paper Trade: The AI Revolution Reshaping the Industry Landscape
Innovation | Rachel Schollmeier | October 31, 2023
In the midst of a technological whirlwind, the paper trade industry stands as a testament to the dynamic forces of change sweeping through today's business landscape. At the forefront of this revolution is Artificial Intelligence (AI), the transformative juggernaut that has redefined how we approach traditional industries. We recently sat down with Matt Freed, sales manager at Millcraft Paper Company, to delve into how AI is reshaping the very fabric of the paper trade.
Overview: The Dynamic Application of AI
AI is not entirely new to the paper trade industry; however, its transformative potential is being recognized more than ever. When asked about its current applications, Freed highlighted the pivotal role of data and analytics: "Data and analytics is probably the biggest, at least from what I've seen. And then on the operational side, from a warehouse and logistics standpoint, those two are probably where they're being used." AI is making waves by providing crucial insights into supply chain dynamics, purchasing trends and regional economic indicators, enabling industry leaders to make informed decisions.
The application doesn't stop at data analysis. AI is a game-changer in the realm of warehouse management, helping to overcome labor challenges and enhance operational efficiency. By reallocating human resources, AI aids in streamlining processes, ensuring minimal disruption and contributing to cost savings.
When it comes to transportation, AI continues to evolve, offering tools for efficient routing, traffic prediction and improved delivery experiences. Notably, AI also plays a critical role in enhancing safety, as AI-powered systems can provide real-time alerts for various safety-related concerns, making the industry safer for all stakeholders.
The Exciting Future of AI in Paper Trade
AI is paving the way for exciting prospects in the paper trade industry. According to Freed, one of the most promising trends is the integration of robotics into warehouses. “I think that exists a little bit on a small scale now in the industry, but I think it'll be much more prevalent, certainly, as the cost of that comes down,” Freed said. This move toward automation can increase efficiency and reduce labor dependence, addressing the challenge of finding sufficient human resources.
Additionally, Freed anticipates the adoption of autonomous vehicles, which will not only save costs but also contribute to sustainability. “We'll have to look at our footprints of what we're selling where and be cognizant of the emissions that are going into the atmosphere, particularly if there's regulation around that,” Freed said. These intelligent vehicles will help manage carbon footprints more effectively, considering their environmental impact.
Moreover, AI promises to revolutionize the customer experience, offering full transparency and control over orders and deliveries. Imagine knowing precisely where your product is in the production and delivery process and having the ability to communicate changes in real time. This level of customer-centric service is the future AI can offer.
Potential Risks and Limitations
As with any transformative technology, AI in the paper trade industry has its risks. For instance, over-reliance on AI for decision-making can lead to decreased investments in other critical aspects of the business. "If we have to invest a significant portion of our budget in intelligent tools and cybersecurity, it may limit our ability to invest in other areas," Freed said.
AI's effectiveness also depends on the quality of the data it receives. Given the industry's dynamic nature, factors like economic conditions and global events can lead to skewed data, impacting AI's decision-making capabilities. This risk highlights the importance of cross-checking and verifying AI-generated insights.
Success Stories at Millcraft
At Millcraft, AI has already played a significant role in automating processes and enhancing efficiency. One of the standout applications is in the automated processing of various order types. "We have implemented intelligent technology to optically read various types of order submissions, such as PDFs or handwritten purchase orders, automatically populating our system. This has resulted in significant efficiency gains,” Freed said.
Millcraft has also embraced AI to provide proactive inventory management for customers. "We have implemented tools that allow us to monitor customer inventory in real time. When their inventory drops below predefined levels, our system automatically generates reorders, ensuring their stock remains consistent,” Freed said.
NPTA's Role in Guiding the Industry
The National Paper Trade Association (NPTA) plays a pivotal role in guiding and supporting the paper trade industry as it navigates the challenges and opportunities brought by AI and emerging technologies. Freed expressed confidence in NPTA's ability to advocate for its members and provide educational resources, legal counsel and seminars to help them adapt to AI-driven changes.
AI is ushering in a new era for the paper trade industry, with exciting possibilities and challenges to address. As we continue to embrace the transformative power of AI, the industry stands to benefit from increased efficiency, sustainability and customer satisfaction. While challenges exist, with the right guidance and continued support from associations like NPTA, the paper trade industry is on a path to AI-driven success.
