Nippon Paper to Cut Graphic Paper Capacity, Strengthen Tissue and Packaging Businesses

Nippon Paper Industries is in the process of reorganizing its production platform, permanently shutting down some of the machines at its Shiraoi and the Yatsushiro mills in Japan and reducing printing and writing paper capacity by almost 300,000 tons per year (tpy). Nippon Paper is taking these steps in response to the decline in graphic paper demand in Japan. Indeed, graphic paper deliveries nationwide have dropped from 9.68 million tpy in 2018 to 6.51 million tpy last year.
