DS Smith determined through its recent Unboxing Consumer Preferences on Sustainable Packaging study that sustainability has become the most important feature of a shipped package. The poll of 1,048 U.S. adults indicated that consumers want retail brands to clearly communicate their sustainability success. The paying public also indicated that they’re more focused than ever on how much retailers are cutting out waste in stores and in e-commerce. More specific findings include: 46 percent of respondents say empty space in a box bothers them, and 75 percent of those same respondents said empty space indicates that the brand doesn't prioritize sustainability; 33 percent of consumers have noticed better options to reduce waste at check-out, including the removal of plastic bags; and 75 percent showed interest in intelligent packaging — those built with sensors to ensure the product remains in optimal condition or temperature — with 28 percent open to paying as much as $5 more for such a package.
