Shoppers Will Pay More for Bananas, Coffee and Toilet Paper Because of Tariffs, Trade Group Says

American shoppers will likely pay more for such staples as coffee and toilet paper over the coming weeks as President Trump's new tariffs go into effect. The United States plans to hike tariff rates on goods imported from over 180 countries and territories with the goal of bringing jobs back stateside. However, some "critical" materials and ingredients found in food, beverages and goods used daily by U.S. consumers are not available domestically, according to the Consumer Brands Association (CBA), an industry trade group that represents Procter & Gamble, Target and other consumer giants. Tom Madrecki, the CBA's vice president of supply chain resiliency, issued an official statement that read: "Reciprocal tariffs that do not reflect ingredient and input availability concerns will inevitably raise costs, limit consumer access to affordable products and unintentionally harm iconic American manufacturers."
