In mid-May, Governor Bob Ferguson signed the Recycling Reform Act into law, making Washington the seventh state with a producer responsibility law for packaging and paper products. The new law aims to improve Washington’s recycling rates by creating a producer responsibility program that holds businesses financially responsible for the waste their products create. Additionally, it will expand recycling statewide by providing free curbside recycling to an estimated 500,000 more homes, as well as reduce recycling confusion by creating one list of what can and can't be recycled throughout the state. The Recycling Reform Act is indeed similar to laws already passed in California, Colorado, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Oregon.
