Sappi has announced the expansion of its barrier paper portfolio for flexible packaging applications. The company now offers mono-material papers designed to run on existing packaging lines and qualify for paper recycling streams. Sappi's portfolio targets a wide range of products from teas, cereals and chocolate to flour, dried fruits and instant soups. "Brand owners want alternatives to plastic that fit into their real production environment," remarks Gustavo Duarte, head of business development at Sappi Europe. "The interest has grown fast in recent years." He notes that Sappi's barrier papers address three requirements: one, product protection through moisture and oxygen barriers; two, compatibility with existing packaging equipment; and, three, recyclability. The papers require tension, heat and sealing pressure adjustments. However, they typically do not necessitate new production lines. Using dispersion-based technology that enables recycling in paper waste streams, Sappi has been developing barrier papers for over a decade.
