The Unifor Eastern Forestry Wage Policy Conference was held from Feb. 4 to Feb. 6 in Montreal. Key bargaining priorities were discussed at the three-day event including wage improvements, pension security, and measures to support workforce stability and long-term sustainability of operations. "The union is calling on all levels of government to implement a national industrial strategy that prioritizes value-added manufacturing, rebuilds domestic supply chains, and protects Canadian forestry jobs," remarks Unifor Quebec Director Daniel Cloutier. As the forestry sector remains under siege by tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, Unifor continues to urge the federal government to increase domestic demand via initiatives such as Canada's Housing Plan, which can help stabilize markets for Canadian paper products. A pattern agreement reached with Domtar at the conference will serve as the template for negotiations with all other employers in the eastern forestry sector, including paper mills. Unifor ranks as Canada's biggest union in the private sector, representing approximately 320,000 workers in every major area of the economy.
