U.K.-based John Crane claims it has helped a U.S. pulp and paper mill reduce water consumption by 90 percent and save US$75,000 in total cost of ownership via a mechanical seal upgrade in its cellulose fibre production process. According to the flow-control technology company, the project was able to address persistent seal failures and excessive water use that were impacting the mill's reliability and sustainability performance. The mill has extended seal life from weeks to more than a year and sharply reduced water demand with the deployment of John Crane's Type SB2 USP heavy-duty dual cartridge mechanical seal with Upstream Pumping seal face technology. The mill had been experiencing frequent mechanical seal failures, with the mean time between repairs averaging three weeks. John Crane is a subsidiary of Smiths Group PLC, a global technology business listed on the London Stock Exchange.
