The Paper in Your Paper Towel Is a Candidate for a Radical Overhaul

Kimberly-Clark has discovered that hesperaloe can be used to make stronger and softer paper-based products. Kimberly-Clark has invested approximately $250 million in researching the arid-climate plant and says commercializing it will require multiples of that sum. Kimberly-Clark is currently constructing a pilot facility in Yuma, Ariz., to evaluate the plant's viability as a commercial crop. Kimberly-Clark touts that it is the first to do extensive research on hesperaloe. As such, it already holds over 30 patents related to its findings.
